Title: Signal Processing and Computational Systems Biology
Speaker: Prof. Yufei Huang, Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Texas at San Antonio, Texas, USA
Abstract: Biomedical research has entered an exciting era of systems biology. In contrast to the experimental-centric approach of the traditional biomedical research, systems biology relies on iterative application of biomedical experiments and knowledge with mathematical modeling and systems control theory to investigate interplays of molecules and cells in time and space to determine functioning of a complex biological system. Translation of such knowledge into medicine is and will continue to revolutionize disease diagnosis and prognosis, medical therapy, prevention, drug discovery, and drug design.
In this talk, I will first explain the importance of signal processing in system biology research by introducing the concept of systems biology and various types of high throughput biological data. I will then briefly discuss the signal processing applications to reconstruct genetic regulatory networks of malaria using gene sequences and microarray expression data, cancer prognosis based on mass spectrometry data and time dependent genetic regulatory module discovery using time series microarray data. I will conclude the talk by providing outlooks of systems biology research.
